B U L G A R I A – ANCIENT AND MODERN

Day 01 – Arrival at Sofia airport. Halfday sightseeing tour of the city, including a walk in the central area with visit to Al. Nevski Cathedral, ruins of Roman and mediaeval period, St. George Rotunda. (4th c. AD) St. Petka of the Saddlers Church. Dinner and overnight in Sofia.

Day 02 – After breakfast drive from Sofia to Rila Monastery. Entrance to Rila Monastery- the largest and one of oldest Bulgarian monasteries (10th c.). Lunch at a local restaurant, situated close to the monastery. Drive from Rila to Plovdiv. Dinner and overnight in Plovdiv.

Day 03 – Halfday sightseeing of the old part of the town (by foot mainly) with beautiful houses from the Bulgarian Revival period (18th – 19th c.). Entrance to the ethnographic museum, to Roman theatre, to St. Constantine and Elena church. Lunch at local restaurant with Bulgarian dishes. Drive to Kazanlak – centre of the Valley of Roses. Entrance to the ethnographic complex and to the Thracian tomb (4th-3rd c. BC). Shopping of Bulgarian cosmetic products based on rose oil. Dinner and overnight at hotel in Kazanlak.

Day 04 – Drive from Kazanlak through Shipka pass to Veliko Tarnovo - capital of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom (12th-14th c.), picturesquely situated on the hills at the banks of the meandering river Jantra. Entrance to the mediaeval fortress of Tsarevets hill. Lunch at local restaurant in Arbanassi – 17th c. fortified village; entrance to Konstanzliev’s house (17th c.) and Jesus Christ’s Nativity Church which interior is covered in frescos depicting 2000 scenes. Dinner and overnight in Veliko Tarnovo.

Day 05 – Veliko Tarnovo - Shumen. On the way – entrance to Preslav museum (exhibiting original gold treasure from the 10th c). Lunch at local restaurant. Half day sightseeing of the town – Tombul Mosque (18th c) the largest mosque in Bulgaria and the Monument of the Founders of the Bulgarian State. Dinner and overnight in Shumen.

Day 06 - Full day excursion to Varna – capital of the Black Sea coast. On the way – visit to Madara horseman-relief on the rocks (9th c.) one of the Bulgarian monuments, included in UNESCO World Heritage List. Sightseeing tour of Varna – the biggest town at the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. Entrance to the Roman baths, the History museum and The Holy Virgin Cathedral. Lunch at local restaurant in Varna. Return to Shumen for folklore dinner with show at the tavern of Shumen hotel. Accommodation at Shumen hotel****.

Day 07 – Option 1 - Drive from Shumen to Russe. Crossing border with Romania.

               Option 2 - Drive back to Sofia for dinner and overnight.

Day 08 – Time at leisure and departure flight.
